eco-tourism in harmony with the nature, the Latin root Fonda
means a place of rest or nourishment after a long journey. Vela,
or candle, for us represents service and good faith. To this
we add a peaceful atmosphere that is sensitive to the local
environment.
The Fonda Vela Hotel is located in beautiful Monteverde, famous
for its resplendent quetzals, three-wattled bellbirds, an
abundance of orchids, and a gorgeous cloud forest. The climate
is refreshing, many times referred to as "eternal spring".
The views of the Gulf of Nicoya from this 1400 meters elevation
are spectacular. Monteverde is an ideal destination for
relaxing and enjoy the wonders of the tropics. A visit of
at least 2 nights in Monteverde is recomended.
The
Fonda Vela Hotel has nine buildings are scattered throughout
the landscaped property, and are designed with natural lighting,
privacy and warmth in mind. They all have large windows with
views of our forest allowing the beauty outside to be a part
of the cozy interior.The
suites have a small refrigerator, tables, king-size bed on the
main floor and a loft with a queen-size bed. Our junior suites
have a small refrigerator, table king and queen-size beds, and
a comfortable sofa. Televisions and telephones will soon be
available in the junior suites. Please ask at the time of making
your reservation. Most rooms are wheelchair accessible.
On
the 35-acre property, you will find the lush forests and verdant
pastures excellent for birding and hiking. In this tranquil
setting, you may see flocks of parrots and emerald toucanets
that come to feed in the fruit trees. Horses graze peacefully
in the pasture below. A 15-minute walk away is the world famous
10,500-hectare Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which incorporates
five tropical life zones. The Santa Elena Reserve is a short
drive away, where on a clear day you may observe the Arenal
Volcano.
Throughout
the Fonda Vela you will find paintings of Paul Smith,
the owners' father and original settler of the property.
These, and works by other Monteverde artists, display
many interpretations of the mysterious cloud forest with
its veils of mist - encouraging the mind to meditate on
the meaning of peaceful living.
The Fonda Vela has
40 rooms in 9 separate buildings, this includes 20 standard
rooms, 18 junior suites, and two mountain suites. All
rooms have private bath, hot water and 2 queen-size beds.
Other services include
our elegant, spacious restaurant, a separate bar and TV
room. Our meeting rooms seat 50 people and have balconies
overlooking the forest. Private hiking trails, guided
horse-back riding, and laundry service is also available.

The Fonda Vela is
a great hotel for birdwatching. We have more than one
kilometer of private hiking trails and we are within walking
distance to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the Hummingbird
Gallery, the Children's EternalRainforest. For night entertainment,
we are approximately one Km from the local disco, La Cascada.
